Jonathan Kaye

I undertook a law degree at university because I was interested in how laws are made and enforced.  My career as a public lawyer has enabled me to continue my interest in the way the law balances rights and interests and how it regulates areas of activity.  At the same time my career has enabled me to help a wide range of public-sector clients carry out their functions.  I enjoy helping clients understand their legal obligations, exercise public powers and make decisions.

I have been privileged to have been involved in a wide range of significant public law matters during my career.  Public law issues are always intensely interesting and learning about the issues my clients are responsible for is a key challenge and satisfaction of my public law work.  My goal is to fully understand the issues my clients are dealing with, even if they involve technical matters, to ensure I can provide my clients with advice that is practical, robust, and enables my clients to do what they want to do.

I also have considerable experience providing drafting services for clients and assisting them with Bills, regulations and rules.  I undertake reviews and inquiries for clients and prepare submissions and reports on law changes.

I also provide advice on governance issues, occupational regulatory matters, and have undertaken judicial review proceedings for clients in the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.

Career details

My career started in 1991 as a lawyer working in the public service.  Since 1997 I have been in private legal practice and was a partner with a major national law firm for a number of years.  I commenced practice as a sole practitioner in 2008.  I am a co-author of Brookers Building Law in New Zealand.
